Staying safe & safety planning
A safety plan is just a few practical steps to help keep you and your kids safer — whether you are staying, getting ready to leave, or have already left.
Leaving can be the most dangerous time.
You do not have to do this alone — a worker can help you plan the safest way.

Staying safer day to day
- Notice the warning signs and pick a safer room (with a way out, not the kitchen or bathroom).
- Agree a code word with someone you trust so they know to get help.
- Teach the kids how and when to call 000, and a safe place to go.
- Keep your phone charged and important numbers saved.
If you are thinking about leaving
- Pack a small bag if you can: ID, Medicare/Centrelink details, money or cards, medicine, keys, phone & charger, and a few things for the kids.
- Keep copies of important papers somewhere safe (with a trusted person, or photos in a secure account).
- Think about where you could go — family, a friend, or a refuge. A DV worker can help arrange this.
- Plan how you will travel and what you will say if asked.
Staying safe online & on your phone
- If someone may check your device, use a private/incognito window and clear history after.
- Watch for tracking — turn off location sharing if it is safe to do so.
- For image-based abuse or online harassment, the eSafety Commissioner (esafety.gov.au) can help.
